My Story

A Double Tribute

As a husband and wife team who have worked together in cancer research for over 45 years, we will, as a team once again, be taking on the 100 mile RideLondon-Essex cycling challenge on 29th May.

As the lead research scientists at Leukaemia Busters it has been our privilege over the 32 year history of the charity to steer the scientific agenda in the quest for better and safer treatments for leukaemia patients. To achieve this we have needed money and we are in awe at the number of kind hearted generous people that have raised millions of pounds over the years to support our laboratory-based and clinical trial work. This support has come in many different forms that have ranged from sporting events, to cake sales and much, much more besides. To them we want to say the biggest thank you possible.

Now it’s time for us to pay tribute to all those people who in the past and present have raised money to make the charity’s work possible and take on our own challenge as a tribute to them and to feel the pain that some of them must have also felt. Taking on the RideLondon-Essex cycle ride 100 mile challenge is a tall order, especially at our age and especially as neither of us have done a cycle challenge before. Still, we’re confident that we can do it as we’re both in reasonable physical shape for our age and have taken regular daily physical exercise for the past umpteen years.

We are also dedicating this challenge to our only son Simon who we lost to leukaemia 32 years ago at the age of 10. We shall never forget him and we are so very proud of the lasting legacy he has left behind through the work that has been made possible in a laboratory that bears his name; The Simon Flavell Leukaemia Research Laboratory at Southampton General Hospital.

If you feel able to sponsor us for the RideLondon-Essex event on the 29th May please donate via this fundraising page. Every penny we raise through sponsorship is guaranteed to go directly into our potentially lifesaving research work. Thank you, support for any amount will be gratefully received, very much appreciated and most importantly put to very good use in our bid to save young lives in the future.
